PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY

After looking at the work of Debra Fabricius, Pedro Guimaraes and Jodie Taylor, the text questions whether it is possible to produce an objective depiction of a place or if the outcome will always be influenced by the artist.

My opinion is that I’m sure it is possible, but predominantly you will always be seeing what the artist wants you to see. People will always see things differently to the person next to them. If I see a scene or a vision and photograph it, I think that my viewer will also see that scene, but that’s not the case. It’s unlikely that the people viewing my images will see exactly what I envisioned when I took the photograph. Any artist can produce their work to reflect their take on a place or a ‘character’. So technically, we see what they want us to see. However, when we see that work or that place with our own eyes, us the viewers- could look at it in a completely different perspective. So yes, I think you can produce the objective depiction of a certain place but there will always be some influence from the artist. Either way, I don’t think it matters purely because the viewer will always depict it in a different view.
